CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- The daughter of Westboro Baptist Church founder Fred Phelps has complained to Charleston Police Chief Brent Webster that six church members taking part in protests at the state Capitol and the University of Charleston on Thursday were not adequately protected. Two men, a woman and three young children from the Topeka, Kan.-based fringe church marched briefly in front of the Statehouse and UC carrying signs proclaiming, among other things, "Thank God for Dead Miners," "God Hates Your Tears" and "God Hates West Virginia."

BLACKSBURG, Va., (WIBW)_ Members of Topeka-based Westboro Baptist Church turned up at the Upper Big Branch mine in West Virginia on Friday morning. They were there for a protest following the mine disaster which claimed the lives of at least 25 miners. Rescue teams continue to search for four more miners whose fate is still unknown.
The church claims the explosion was a result of a threatening memo that the church said was sent from West Virginia, the New York Times reported.
According to the Charleston Gazette, more than 300 counter-protesters were on hand for a counter demonstration against the six church members who showed up.

LGF used the term 'Dog Whistle' to refer to Gingrich's comment that we needed a 'President, not an athlete'. I had never heard of the term so I Googled it. Turns out it is just another pathetic way to throw the race card.
Here's what WIKI says:
One group of alleged code words in the United States is claimed to appeal to racism of the intended audience. The phrase "states' rights", although literally referring to powers of individual state governments in the United States, has been described as a code word for institutionalized segregation and racism.[6] Other terms that some people say are used to indicate alleged veiled racism are "crime in the streets" and "welfare queens".[7]Former president George W. Bush is alleged to have used coded language in his speeches to send messages to his supporters among the religious right that will be ignored by other parts of the U.S. population. Examples include his frequent use of biblical phrases and the veiled mention of the Dred Scott Supreme Court decision in the 2004 Presidential debates. The latter refers to overturning Roe v. Wade, which is likened to the Dred Scott case by some of its critics.[8]
David Gergen claimed that John McCain's 2008 presidential campaign against Barack Obama used dog whistle tactics targeting racists, while retaining plausible deniability though only cited one example in which a McCain ad featured Obama as "The One". David Gergen said that it was implying Obama was "uppity" and that was code for "he should stay in his place". The McCain campaign made it clear it was in reference to Obama's popularity as a god-like figure.[9]
Here's what a site (Stop Dog Whistle Racism) set up during the election defined it as:
Dog-Whistle Racism is political campaigning or policy-making that uses coded words and themes to appeal to conscious or subconscious racist concepts and frames. For example, the concepts ‘welfare queen,’ ’states’ rights,’ ‘Islamic terrorist,’ ‘uppity,’ 'thug,' 'tough on crime,' and ‘illegal alien’ all activate racist concepts that that have already been planted in the public consciousness and now are being activated by purposeful or accidental campaign activities, media coverage, public policy and cultural traditions. So, what’s dog whistle racism? It’s pure political theater to push buttons to win elections and policies. StopDogWhistleRacism.com, a project of the Center for Social Inclusion, is here to identify, expose and help you to track it.

Via Jamie Wearing Fool: MSNBC laughingstock Norah O'Donnell broke out the racial radar this morning by making some lame assertions that Newt Gingrich's criticism of Barack Obama was somehow racist. Yes, it come this this in America. Criticizing a half-black man for doing a lousy job is racist in the eyes of far-left TV babbleheads.MSNBC’s Norah O’Donnell on Friday went too far for even her colleagues at the liberal cable channel, receiving mockery for her assertion that Newt Gingrich made racially charged remarks about Barack Obama. At the Southern Republican Leadership Conference, Thursday, the former GOP leader commented that “shooting three-point shots may be clever.”
Speaking of the President’s basketball skills, Gingrich added, “But it doesn’t put anybody to work. And what we need is a president, not an athlete. We need somebody who actually focuses on getting people back to work.” After the clip was played, Morning Joe guest host O’Donnell lobbed her accusation at Gingrich.
“But I’m not sure what he means by this particular sound bite,” said O’Donnell. “And I think it’s open to some criticism because it suggests that the president is an athlete and some people may suggest, you know, because all black people are good athletes. I mean that’s what it sort of sounds like to me.”

Zhang Ruifang first noticed the horn on the left side of her forehead developing in 2009 - and it's now around 6cm long.
And she says that doctors have now confirmed earlier suspicions that she's now developing a similar growth on the right side of her forehead.
Zhang says she's turned down offers to have them removed - because she's never had so many well-wishers and visitors at her home in Linlou, eastern China.
'At first it was a nuisance sleeping and so on, but now I get people visiting me all the time bringing me food and gifts and asking to take my picture. 'I had some doctors who said they would cut it off for free but I told them no. In fact I'm quite looking forward to when the matching one has grown a bit,' she explained.

(Daily Caller)- The usually impressive Inside Higher Ed today runs an unusually insipid piece about the Organization of American Historians’ annual meeting. In addition to panels like Footnotes: Pros and Cons, Why We Are Still Relevant, and Should Dogs Be Allowed in the Office?, there was apparently a delightful rant session on reinterpreting the New Deal:
The idea that New Deal history offers a very specific set of lessons for our own time came up again during the Q&A period, when one attendee – Jennifer Ross-Nazzal, a historian with the NASA Johnson Space Center who also works as an adjunct instructor for the University of Maryland University College – asked the panelists about how to handle “students who are attracted to the arguments of the teabaggers.”
“Basically I try to present facts,” McElvaine said. Still, he acknowledged, “to some people, facts are irrelevant.”
So, kudos to the very professional Jennifer Ross-Nazzal for using a slur at an academic convention–this is 2010 and it would have been obnoxiously prudish and uptight of her to say “Tea Party movement” instead of “teabaggers”–and double kudos to McElvaine for providing his fact-hating students with the incentive to spit their gum in his open grade book and then slam it shut next time he turns around to snort another line of John Kenneth Galbraith’s dried blood!

(Telegraph)- A new exhibition of Blasphemous art opened at the Irish Museum of Contemporary Art (Imoca) in Dublin on Good Friday. The aim of the event is to protest against the ludicrous Defamation Act, introduced by justice minister Dermot Ahern last year, which makes the publication or utterance of blasphemous matter a crime punishable by a €25,000 (£22,500) fine.
Although a defence of “genuine literary, artistic, political, scientific or artistic value” is allowed, K Bear Koss, director of the Imoca, argues that the “law prevents intellectual debate”.
So they’re testing this theory with works of art such as “F— Christmas”, “Bible Gun” and “Resur-erection”, which all satirise religious imagery. And they’re certainly taking no prisoners, mocking such figures as Jesus Christ, the Virgin Mary, and, hold on, I’m sure there’s someone missing here, but my brain isn’t working. Who could it be?

Obama's unacceptable omission is his failure to mention the history of Muslim, Kenyan and Democratic Party involvement in slavery...
WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Barack Obama says Virginia's governor made "an unacceptable omission" when he proclaimed it Confederate History Month without mentioning slavery.
"I don't think you can understand the Confederacy and the Civil War unless you understand slavery," said Obama, the nation's first black president.
First lady Michelle Obama is descended from a South Carolina slave.
Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell came under harsh criticism for issuing April's history month proclamation without any reference to slavery.
The Republican governor at first defended his decree, saying it was intended to honor the Confederate sacrifice on Virginia soil and promote tourism.
On Wednesday he apologized and added a paragraph condemning slavery, saying that leaving it out had been a "major omission."

Why would anyone, even a group as liberal as Planned Parenthood, be against telling a sexual partner they have HIV?...
(CNSNews.com) – In a guide for young people published by the International Planned Parenthood Federation, the organization says it opposes laws that make it a crime for people not to tell sexual partners they have HIV.The IPPF's “Healthy, Happy and Hot” guide also tells young people who have the virus that they have a right to “fun, happy and sexually fulfilling lives.”
“Some countries have laws that say people living with HIV must tell their sexual partner(s) about their status before having sex, even if they use condoms or only engage in sexual activity with a low risk of giving HIV to someone else,” the guide states. “These laws violate the rights of people living with HIV by forcing them to disclose or face the possibility of criminal charges.”
Under the heading “Sexual Pleasure and Well-Being,” the guide declares that it is a human right and not a criminal issue as to whether a person decides if or when to disclose their HIV status, even if they engage in sexual activities.
“You know best when it is safe for you to disclose your status,” the guide states. “There are many reasons that people do not share their HIV status. They may not want people to know they are living with HIV because of the stigma and discrimination within their community.”

USA Today: GOSHEN, Ind. — Rockets red glare, bombs bursting in air – these are the words that brought tears to the eyes of those who witnessed the historic first playing of the national anthem at Goshen College Tuesday afternoon.Tears of pain for 22-year-old Marlys Weaver, a senior journalism student who hates the images of war she sees "in nearly every verse."
Tears of joy for 56-year-old Steven Shriner, a retired Air Force sergeant who proudly wears a red, white and blue cap.
They were among more than 100 people who gathered around the Goshen baseball diamond to hear the patriotic tune that had never been played at the Mennonite college that has always embraced its peace-loving, pacifist roots.
But as the 1,000-student campus has grown increasingly diversified – only 55% of students today are Mennonite, compared to more than 60% a few decades ago – the pressure to show allegiance to the flag has grown.
After a visiting fan complained a year ago and a conservative radio show picked up the story, Goshen embarked on months ofpassionate debate – exploring what it means to be a Mennonite in a society that embraces the flag – a debate that concluded Tuesday with the national anthem and the inaugural hoisting of the American flag down the first base line.
...
The small wooden grandstands were packed with more than 100 fans, a mix of students and adults. Most of them stood during the playing of the anthem – about a dozen remained seated and at least one booed during the song.
Some students painted American flags on their chest while members of an off-campus group – caling themselves the Jesus Radicals – came dressed in black with black crosses painted on their foreheads.
"This is a sign of mourning," said Nekeisha Alexis-Baker about the cross.
Meanwhile, Taylor TenHarmsel, a junior, proudly displayed a generous splash of red white and blue on his chest.
"The freedom that flag has given us allows us to do this," he said.

Liz Cheney's announcement of Netanyahu's cancellation was met with a round of applause in the Southern Republican Leadership Conference in New Orleans.
Cheney, daughter of former US Vice President Richard Cheney, opened the conference with a verbal attack against the Obama administration and noted the cold reception the president gave the prime minister during his last Washington visit.

Netanyahu decided to cancel his Washington trip after learning that several Muslim nations were planning to raise the fact that Israel is a not a member of the Non Proliferation Treaty during the conference.

Plum Line: In a shot across the bow of Dems, the labor powerhouse SEIU is starting a new third party in North Carolina that hopes to field its own slate of candidates, part of an effort to make the Democratic Party more reliable on issues important to labor, I’m told.SEIU officials setting up the new party, called North Carolina First, are currently on the ground collecting signatures to qualify as a state party, SEIU officials tell me, adding that there are around 100 canvassers on the ground right now. The goal: To have the party up and running so candidates can run in this fall’s elections.
It won’t be lost on political observers that three House Dems who voted No on reform are from the state: Heath Shuler, Mike McIntyre, and Larry Kissell.
The new project is an outgrowth of SEIU’s earlier vow to hold House Dems accountable for voting against heatlh reform and against labor’s interests in general. That said, presuming the party qualifies at all, it remains to be seen how much clout it will wield.

The Hill - Fundamental changes to the federal budget will be needed to rein in unsustainable deficits, Congress’s budget watchdog said Thursday.“U.S. fiscal policy is unsustainable, and unsustainable to an extent that it can't be solved through minor changes,” Congressional Budget Office (CBO) Director Douglas Elmendorf told reporters at a Christian Science Monitor breakfast.
Spending on Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security, plus defense programs and debt interest, will exceed the rest of the federal budget in 10 years if most of the 2001 and 2003 tax cuts are extended, as President Barack Obama has proposed, Elmendorf said.
“It's a matter of arithmetic,” Elmendorf said of getting record deficits under control.
“Government would need to make changes in some set of the large programs, large parts of the tax code that we think of as the fundamental parts of the budget.”
Elmendorf's remarks come a day after Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke also called on policymakers to put in place a plan to reduce deficits.
“Unless we as a nation demonstrate a strong commitment to fiscal responsibility, in the longer run we will have neither financial stability nor healthy economic growth,” Bernanke said in a speech Wednesday.
The CBO projects that Obama's policies would produce deficits averaging nearly $1 trillion for the next decade.

(Reuters)- Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has canceled a planned trip to Washington next week to take part in President Barack Obama's 47-country nuclear security summit conference.ZIPHe made the decision after learning that Egypt and Turkey intended to raise the issue of Israel's presumed nuclear arsenal at the conference, a senior government official said on Friday.
Israel is believed to be the only nuclear-armed power in the Middle East but has never confirmed or denied that it possesses atomic weapons. It has not signed the nuclear non-proliferation treaty (NPT).
Netanyahu saw Obama at the White House late last month for talks on the stalled Middle East peace process with the Palestinians, but they failed to see eye to eye and relations between the two leaders remain at a low ebb.
"The prime minister has decided to cancel his trip to Washington to attend the nuclear conference next week, after learning that some countries including Egypt and Turkey plan to say Israel must sign the NPT," the official said.
Israeli media said Netanyahu feared that Islamic countries attending the summit would try to shift its focus from nuclear terrorism to a concerted attack on his country's presumed nuclear weapons capacity.

(Telegraph)- A CHARITY praised last week by Gordon Brown and the Prince of Wales has channelled hundreds of thousands of pounds to groups linked to Hamas, the banned terrorist organisation, according to security sources. The Prime Minister and the heir to the throne personally praised Muslim Aid, whose own accounts show it has paid at least £325,000 to the Islamic University of Gaza, where leading Hamas figures teach, and £13,998 to the al-Ihsan Charitable Society, designated by the US government as a “sponsor of terrorism” and a front for the Palestinian Islamic Jihad terrorist group.
Security sources also claim that Muslim Aid has helped channel a further £210,600 to six other organisations in the Gaza Strip since July 2009, all of which they say are linked to Hamas.
In a video address to Muslim Aid’s 25th anniversary dinner on Wednesday, Mr Brown praised the charity’s “valuable work” and said: “I wish Muslim Aid and its passionate and committed staff and supporters the very best for another 25 years of achievement.”
The Prince sent a message saying that “our country is incredibly fortunate to be able to count on organisations like Muslim Aid, who bring not only help, but hope to those most in need”. However, one foreign security source said: “We are opening our eyes on them. In the past they were supporting the outer rim of Hamas societies in Gaza. Now they are supporting the core.” The Islamic University of Gaza, created in 1978 by the founder of Hamas, Sheikh Ahmed Yassin, is the main training ground for future Hamas leaders and dozens of its current leaders also teach, or have taught, there. Ismail Haniyeh, the Hamas leader, was a trustee. It is described by The New York Times as “one of the prime means for Hamas to convert Palestinians to its Islamist cause.” Its rector of advanced studies has been quoted as saying that Jews should be “butchered”. Other Hamas-linked organisations to which Muslim Aid has channelled money, according to security sources, are the National Association for Moderation and Development (£125,000), the Islamic Society of Nuseirat (£37,000), the Islamic Centre of Gaza (£21,000), the Islamic Society of Khan Younis (£15,000), the Khan Younis Zakat Committee (£7,600) and the Islamic al-Salah, Gaza (£5,000.) Not-so-bold prediction time: Tingles has an epic meltdown tonight...
(ABC News)-Sarah Palin is hammering President Obama for putting unprecedented limits on the use of U.S. nuclear weapons, comparing him to a kid in a playground who is asking for a punch in the face.
<>"It's unbelievable. Unbelievable," said Palin on Wednesday evening while appearing on Sean Hannity's Fox News program. "No administration in America's history would, I think, ever have considered such a step that we just found out President Obama is supporting today. It's kinda like getting out there on a playground, a bunch of kids, getting ready to fight, and one of the kids saying, 'Go ahead, punch me in the face and I'm not going to retaliate. Go ahead and do what you want to with me.'"No, it's unacceptable," she continued. "This is another thing that the American public, the more that they find out, what is a part of this agenda, they are going to rise up and they are going to say 'no more.' National security, national defense is the No. 1 job of the federal government."
Palin, who is a Fox News contributor, made her remarks while appearing with Rep. Michele Bachmann, R-Minn., on a special edition of Hannity's program. The conservative Fox News anchor brought his show to Minneapolis and conducted it in front of an enormous audience of people who had just attended a Palin-Bachmann rally.
...On the domestic front, Palin warned that President Obama and Democratic leaders in Congress were making good on their promise to fundamentally transform the United States away from its free-market origins.
"Steps towards insolvency. Steps towards socialism with some of their programs," said Palin. "We don't want to see that transformation."
Palin predicted that the press -- which she now regularly refers to as the "lame stream media" -- would get "wee weed up" about her warnings.
"Their heads will spin, and they will tell people that we are fear mongers and that we are exaggerating the state of the union," said Palin. "And yet, this is reality, we cannot keep going down the path were going down."

WASHINGTON (AP) -- A Qatari diplomat was on his way to meet an imprisoned al-Qaida agent when he touched off a bomb scare by slipping into an airline bathroom for a smoke, officials said Thursday as they announced plans to send the diplomat home.
A State Department official and another person close to the matter say Mohammed Al-Madadi was going to meet Ali Al-Marri in prison.
Consular officials frequently visit foreigners held in the United States to make sure they are being treated well.
Al-Marri, a citizen of Qatar, is serving eight years in prison after pleading guilty last year to conspiring to support terrorism.
He was arrested after the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, accusing him of being a sleeper agent researching poisonous gases and plotting a cyberattack.
The visit with such a high-profile prisoner suggests that Al-Madadi would have been very aware of terrorism concerns when he sneaked into the plane's bathroom for a smoke and, according to authorities, joked about lighting his shoe on fire.

(AP) KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia — A religious school cook in Malaysia was sentenced to six strokes of the cane and a year in jail for drinking alcohol, an official said Thursday, the latest in a series of harsh punishments from an Islamic court judge.
The rulings by Judge Abdul Rahman Mohamad Yunos have focused attention on the increasing enforcement of the stricter punishment prescribed by Islamic laws and raised fears that Malaysia -- a traditionally moderate country-- may be influenced by radical Islamists.
Consuming alcohol in public is an offence for Malaysian Muslims, who are 60 per cent of the country's 28 million people. Offenders are usually warned or fined, but not in Abdul Rahman's court, the Shariah High Court in Pahang state.
....However, three other Muslim women were caned in February for having sex out of wedlock.
